Energy and UtilitiesLakeshore, along with the Windsor-Essex County area with its temperate climate, has historically recorded the lowest energy charges in Ontario. For electricity, Lakeshore is served by ELK Energy and Ontario Hydro. These enterprises are licensed by the Ontario Energy Board. In terms of water supply, Lakeshore has more than 25 miles (35 plus kilometres) of waterside along Lake St. Clair. Coming on line in August 2008 will be Lakeshore's new $60 million water treatment plant, a state of the art facility which will serve us for generations to come. As well, Lakeshore's Belle River Sewage Treatment facility is being readied for a multi-million dollar expansion and upgrade.
Lakeshore is also part of our area’s extensive natural gas system. Its underground plant supplies nearly 130,000 residential and industrial customers. We may not be Alberta or Texas, but our area produces more oil than any other region in Ontario. In various locales, including some in Lakeshore, there are more than 130 active oil wells. They account for 44 percent of Ontario’s oil production.
