History

50's,60's, 70's

oldtownThe strains of wartime give way to the hopes of the postwar decades. Cars are being built again; young married couples prompt a housing boom; what were formerly farm fields become residential areas or industrial parks. Lakeshore rides this crest, and continues to do so.

1999

The move toward government by region rather than by the more fragmented town and township system of the 19th Century is culminated in Essex County by the reduction in the number of municipal authorities from 17 to seven. The former Town of Belle River joins the former Townships of Maidstone, Rochester and Tilbury North and Tilbury West to form the new Town of Lakeshore. Services, from fire to water utilities, are joined under one civic government.

The Present

water treatmentThe Town of Lakeshore is a focal point for all manner of economic, commercial and industrial activity. There are expanded utilities services, such as a new water treatment plant which is necessary because of the intense development which is planned and already taking place. Lakeshore has grown in population by more than 7,000 people since amalgamation and is now home to more than 35,000 residents. It has industrial areas, continually expanding commercial enterprises, a multi-screen movie theatre, new educational facilities and increasing numbers of new homes, both in areas previously built up and in entirely new subdivisions.
