MAIDSTONE BICENTENNIAL MUSEUM

MAIDSTONE BICENTENNIAL MUSEUM

1093 Puce Road
Phone: (519) 727-8811

This museum contains a number of artifacts donated by citizens of the former Maidstone Township, reflecting home and rural life in the early 1800 & 1900’s. Visit the “New Heritage Gardens” featuring native plants, trees and shrubs.

The Maidstone Bicentennial Museum is located on the historic Puce River where the first Municipal Town hall was constructed in 1875. The original structure was destroyed by fire in 1914. It was immediately replaced by the existing brick building on the same property.  This building was used as the Township’s Municipal Offices for 50 years. In 1964 a new municipal building was constructed on the adjacent property.

On October 16, 1984 the Maidstone and District Historical Society was founded, its goal being to preserve and display the heritage and culture of the area. In honour of the Province of Ontario’s Bicentennial, in that same year, the Society reached an agreement with Maidstone Council to operate the Maidstone Bicentennial Museum in this historic building.

Throughout the years the community has generously donated and loaned the Historical Society an outstanding collection of area artifacts for the public to enjoy. The Historical Society, in partnership with the Essex County Conservation Authority, also showcases a beautiful Heritage Garden on the grounds that contains many unique and rare native plants, shrubs and trees. Highlighting this project is the 400 square foot Butterfly Garden. With these tools the Historical Society has developed an ongoing Children’s Program and Speakers Program to ensure a hands on experience for young and old alike.

The Maidstone & District Historical Society welcomes groups to the Museum to take part in these programs throughout the year.  See history come alive.
