Activities scheduled for October 3 to 9
The Municipality of Lakeshore Fire Department is putting the call out to residents to “get loud” and test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as part of annual Fire Prevention Week efforts.
The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 3-9, is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” The theme serves as an important reminder for residents to check and test alarms, replace batteries, and ensure they’re in proper working order.
“Throughout the pandemic we spent a lot of time at home, but now that we’re getting out more, we may not be as mindful of the upkeep that our alarms require,” said Jeff Pulleyblank, Assistant Deputy Fire Chief.
According to a 2021 story from Firefighting in Canada magazine, teachers conducting online classes throughout the pandemic were dismayed at the number of chirping alarms they heard in the background of their students’ homes.
“If your alarm is chirping, that means it needs your attention,” Pulleyblank added.
Throughout Fire Prevention Week, the Municipality of Lakeshore will share several digital and interactive resources online at www.Lakeshore.ca/FPW and on social media.
Starting October 4, children in JK to Grade 3 are invited to enter a colouring contest. Submissions can be made online and via email (jpulleyblank[at]Lakeshore.ca), with the winners in each grade receiving a gift card for a pizza party for their class. Winners will be notified on October 25.
On October 5, Lakeshore firefighters will hit the road for a day-long parade to all ten grade schools within the Municipality. Students will have the opportunity to learn the sounds of fire safety and interact with firefighters from a safe distance.
