Fire Prevention Week is October 4–10, 2026. Learn how to properly use lithium-ion batteries and how simple charging habits can help prevent fires. To celebrate Fire Prevention Week, the Lakeshore Fire Department invites residents to participate in activities including:

Cheap charger? Don’t risk it.
Use the cord and charger that came with your device, or one approved by the manufacturer.
Soft surface? Skip it.
Charge on a hard, flat surface, such as a table, desk or bare floor.
Fully charged? Unplug it.
Tools and rides? Charge outside.
Charge large items such as e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside. Keep exits clear while charging.
Feeling hot? Stop using it.
Stop using your device if it gets very hot, starts to swell, smells unusual, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.
Flying? Keep it in sight.
When flying, keep devices where you can see them while charging. Do not charge e-cigarettes or vapes on the plane, and tell a flight attendant if you notice a problem.
