Lakeshore Fire Shares Winter Home Safety Tips

With more snow and wind expected over the next week, the Lakeshore Fire Department is reminding residents to stay safe both inside and outside their homes.

Wind and drifting snow can block vents and cause the buildup of dangerous carbon monoxide (CO), which is often called a “silent killer.” Over 65% of CO-related injuries and deaths in Ontario occur in the home.

"Raising awareness about carbon monoxide is crucial for the safety of our communities. Carbon monoxide has no smell or taste, which makes being proactive even more important,” said Lakeshore Fire Chief Jason Suchiu. "Taking a few small steps today can help prevent dangerous, and even deadly, consequences."

To prevent CO buildup, residents should check and clear snow from outdoor exhaust vents from appliances like dryers, furnaces, and stoves.

Residents should also check carbon monoxide alarms and ensure they have one installed on each floor of their home, as well as outside sleeping areas.

As of January 1, 2026, changes to the Ontario Fire Code require homes and apartments to meet new standards for CO alarm locations. Residents can learn more about these changes at Ontario.ca/CarbonMonoxide.

Lakeshore Fire also shared other snow-related safety tips for in and around the home.

  • Shovel snow away from fire hydrants so crews can access them quickly.
  • Keep lights on at night and house numbers visible so first responders can find your home in the event of an emergency.
  • Clear driveways and sidewalks to ensure safe access.
  • Keep space heaters at least 1 metre from combustible materials and never leave them unattended.
