The Municipality of Lakeshore and Lakeshore Fire Department celebrated local firefighters at an event on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the Atlas Tube Recreation Centre. Members of Council, staff, and family members attended the event which recognized the service of firefighters as well as their ongoing contributions to Lakeshore's communities.

"Our fire stations have an incredibly proud history that predates Lakeshore itself, and our firefighters continue to be role models and active members of the communities they serve,” said Mayor Tracey Bailey. “Their service is a testament to what it means to put others first. Thank you for your commitment to shared sacrifice, for going above and beyond for our residents, and for everything you do to make Lakeshore a safer and stronger place.”

"To every member of our fire service - those recognized for long service, those retiring, those beginning their career, and the family and loved ones who make it all possible - we could not do this without you,” said Lakeshore Fire Chief Jason Suchiu. “Your commitment strengthens our department. Your professionalism builds public trust. And your willingness to be there on someone's worst day is one of the finest expressions of public trust."

The event started with a graduation and badge ceremony for the 2025 class of firefighters, who have undergone extensive training and testing to prepare for their service.

Newly graduated firefighter Craig Antaya addressed the event on behalf of his classmates.

“This group was made up of ten individuals who seamlessly bounced our knowledge and experience off each other to become better after every piece of training we received,” Antaya said. “On behalf of all of the recruits, we greatly appreciate the support of our families, chiefs, captains and fellow firefighters."

Following the graduation, an awards ceremony recognized long serving and past members, as well as retirees. These firefighters represented more than 500 combined years of service to Lakeshore.

The event concluded with the presentation of three awards which were created to recognize individuals who consistently go above and beyond in their dedication as well as the commitment to community service extending beyond emergency response.

  • Station 4 Captain Cindy Wickens received the Legacy Leadership Award, which recognizes a firefighter who exemplifies leadership, mentorship, and commitment to become the best they can in their growth while also always being positive in uplifting others.
  • Station 1 Firefighter Sean Tracey received the Heart of the Community Award, which honours a firefighter who exemplifies empathy, inclusivity, and unwavering dedication while striving to support members of the community who may face hardship.
  • Station 4 Firefighter Mathew Orosz received the Orange Shield Trailblazer Award, which is given to a new firefighter (recruit or probationary firefighter) who fully embraces their role and shows perseverance, dedication, and going beyond learning the basics.
