Salt Shortage Impacting Lakeshore’s Winter Operations

Low salt supplies across the region mean drivers should use extra caution with snow in the forecast

Lakeshore is adjusting its winter operations during a region-wide salt shortage.

To conserve municipal supplies, the application of salt will be focused on priority roads and areas prone to ice buildup. Other options, such as the use of sand, are being considered for some areas. Staff are also working with the contractors responsible for maintaining municipal trails and facility parking lots.

Staff are in contact with the local producer to purchase more salt, but sales are limited, and current supply may not be enough to sustain regular snow and ice control.

Lakeshore is asking drivers to use extra caution on local roadways and drive to current conditions. Local trails, sidewalks, and parking lots may also be snow-covered, as residents and business owners are facing similar salt supply issues.

Background:

  • Early season snow and ongoing weather conditions have increased Lakeshore’s use of salt compared to past years.

  • Lakeshore started the winter with 4,500 tons of salt, which is typically enough for an average season of winter operations.
