Heritage Designated Properties

The Ontario Heritage Act allows municipalities and the provincial government to designate properties in Ontario, as being of cultural heritage value or interest. When a property is designated, a Heritage Permit is required for work that may alter the appearance of the property, which ensures the conservation of these properties and districts for present and future generations.

Properties may also be “listed” on a municipality’s heritage register. While listed properties do not have the same protection as designated properties, their purpose is for further designation consideration.
