Land Acknowledgment
Land acknowledgment statements recognize the traditional territory of the Indigenous people who called, and continue to call, the land home before colonization and the arrival of European settlers.
Their practice has been used for centuries by Indigenous people when visiting other tribes and nations as a sign of mutual respect, peace, and declaration of intentions.
We encourage you to read to this statement and reflect on your own role in reconciliation and the building of mutual understanding and respect between nations.
The Municipality of Lakeshore is located on the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy (comprised of the Ojibway, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi Peoples) and is steeped in a deep and rich Indigenous history.
Today we acknowledge the people of these nations whose traditional territory we are meeting on, as well as our responsibility to continue the stewardship of the land with them.
We also acknowledge all of the Indigenous people who have called, or continue to call, this place home.
