Private Fire Hydrants

Fire hydrants that have been installed on private property are to be installed to Fire Hydrant Specifications and must meet Fire Hydrant Details. Hydrants are the responsibility of the property owner to have them inspected and maintained in accordance with the Fire Code, the Building Act and NFPA 24. This includes the operation, painting and colour coding of the hydrant.

Private property owners are also responsible to have the inspection report prepared annually for all privately owned hydrants by a qualified inspector. It is the responsibility of the owner to maintain their private hydrant(s) as defined in By-law 136-2009 To Regulate the Use of Municipally Owned and Privately Owned Fire Hydrants under section 1.15 "Qualified Inspector". See our Bylaw page to obtain the most up to date version of this Bylaw.

The owner is to provide the completed Annual Hydrant Inspection Form to the Town of Lakeshore, Attention: Manager of Environmental Services by December 31 annually. Failure to provide the Town of Lakeshore with the Annual Hydrant Inspection Form, may result in fines as set out in By-law #136-2009.

Hydrant Flushing

Occasionally, you will see Town staff discharging water from fire hydrants. The Town's Water staff releases water from the hydrants as part of its annual flushing program. Hydrant flushing is a normal maintenance procedure and may result in customers experiencing rusty or milky water conditions. Please check when running water and if discolouration occurs, run cold water taps until the water clears. If your water does not run clear, wait a few minutes and run the water again. If this does not clear the water, contact the Town's Environmental Services Department at 519-728-2488. Hydrant flushing may occur between the hours of 7:00am and 3:00pm.

All customers should note that flushing of watermains may be required without notification at various times throughout the year in order to ensure water quality. Thanks for your cooperation, if you have any questions please call the Town's Environmental Services Department at 519-728-2488.
