Third-Party Advertising

A third-party advertisement is an ad in a broadcast, print, electronic, or other medium that promotes, supports, or opposes:

  • a candidate, or
  • a “yes” or “no” position on a question on the ballot.

 

Under section 88.6 of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, only the following individuals and organizations can register as third-party advertisers:

  • an individual who normally lives in Ontario
  • a corporation that carries on business in Ontario
  • a trade union that holds bargaining rights for employees in Ontario

The registration period for third-party advertisers begins on May 1, 2026.

You must register as a third-party advertiser before starting any advertising.

Third-party advertisers can register by filing the required form with the Clerk’s Office during regular business hours:

  • Monday to Friday
  • 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM

The deadline to register is October 23, 2026.
