An Open Burning Bylaw is in effect in Lakeshore. Identified in the Bylaw are 5 burning categories, parameters for approved fires and fee when unauthorized burns occur.

Anyone starting a fire must be at least 18 years of age. No permission is required if rules are followed for all categories except open burning.

Campground Camp Fires

  • Maximum size 18" x 18" x 18"
  • Only clean dry wood or charcoal
  • Must have bucket of water or garden hose at site and someone attending
  • Exempt from both smoke complaints and bylaw setback distances
  • Not permitted during rain, fog, smog alerts or fire bans
  • Only applies to: Rochester Place, Lighthouse Yacht Club, Smugglers Marina, Cove Marina, Quinlan Marina and Stoney Point Trailer Park

Residential Camp Fires

  • Maximum size 24" x 24" x 24"
  • Only clean dry wood or charcoal
  • Must have bucket of water or garden hose at site and someone attending
  • Center of fire must be minimum of 10' from hedges, fence, buildings, etc.
  • Center of fire must be a minimum of 15' from property lines
  • Not allowed when wind could cause smoke annoyance to neighbours
  • Not allowed during rain, fog, smog alerts or fire bans
  • Not allowed on or close to construction sites

Enclosed Fire - 45 gallon drum type

  • Only clean dry wood or charcoal
  • Must have bucket of water or garden hose at site and someone attending
  • Center of fire must be minimum of 10' from hedges, fence, buildings, etc.
  • Center of fire must be a minimum of 15' from property lines
  • Requires wire mesh cover with maximum .25" grid openings
  • Not allowed when wind could cause smoke annoyance to neighbours
  • Not allowed during rain, fog, smog alerts or fire bans
  • Not allowed on or close to construction sites

Not allowed on highways, ditches, commercial, industrial or municipal properties

Open Burning - larger than residential camp fire - permission required

  • Not allowed on highways, ditches, commercial, industrial or municipal properties
  • Not allowed when wind could cause smoke annoyance to neighbours
  • Not allowed during rain, fog, smog alerts or fire bans
  • Not allowed on or close to construction sites
  • Not allowed after sunset or before sunrise
  • Must have sufficient equipment and/or water on site to suppress the fire
  • Smoke cannot decrease visibility on highways
  • Cannot dispose of waste from commercial, industrial, construction or demolition sites
  • A 3' x 3' x 3' wood pile requires a minimum 21' distance from combustibles and property lines
  • Larger fires require larger setback as determined by fire administration
  • Farmers can burn vegetable matter or vegetation incidental to typical farming operations which include: brush, wheat stubble, corn stubble, tree branches/stumps and vegetation debris from excavated farm ditch and drain cleaning
  • Clean dry wood or charcoal can be burned
  • Burning leaves, cat tails, phragmites, garbage, plastics, rubber and shingles, etc. is not permitted
  • All open burning requires permission from fire administration

Domestic Appliance Burning

  • Personal warmth device is fuelled by clean dry wood and is ULC and CSA approved
  • Must follow manufacturers recommendations for setback distances and operation
  • Must have bucket of water or garden hose at site and someone attending
  • Not allowed when wind could cause smoke annoyance to neighbours
  • Not allowed during rain, fog, smog alerts or fire bans

Personal warmth devices fuelled by propane and/or natural gas, barbeques and outdoor fire places used for cooking are not covered under the scope of this bylaw.
