The Denis St. Pierre Wastewater Treatment Plant went into overflow starting at 6:25 PM on August 24, 2023. This overflow event was immediately reported to the Spills Action Centre at Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), as required.
An overflow occurs when the plant exceeds capacity. This overflow event is occurring because of the recent rainfall, causing excess water inflow into the sanitary system, resulting in the plant exceeding its capacity.
Please note that overflows are screened (pre-treated) and combined (diluted) with the fully treated flows to minimize the impact. Further, the Municipality’s operating agency, the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA), takes steps to maximize the flow through the downstream treatment processes and bypasses prior to overflowing. Testing is completed at the onset and during the overflow event (every 8 hours). After the event, a detailed summary of the event, volumes and the testing results are provided to the Spills Action Centre (MECP) and the Medical Officer of Health.
This notice will be taken down once the plant is no longer overflowing and further information on volume and duration of overflow will be posted to the Municipality’s website early next week.
